Wilderness Lodge Arthur's Pass | Canterbury
Midway between Greymouth and Christchurch in the Arthur's Pass, nestled in mountain beech forest, Wilderness Lodge offers comfort and warm hospitality in a spectacular mountain setting.
Discover wild nature in the New Zealand mountains and experience life on their 3,000 hectare nature reserve and high country merino sheep station. The lodge has 24 rooms, an intimate restaurant, lounge, library and theatre for evening nature talks. All Lodge rooms have private bathrooms and sun and superb alpine views, and you can walk from your room into a natural paradise of beech forest, tussock clearings, moss-lined streams and lakes on a network of nature walks.
The highlight of the Lodge is a daily programme of nature discovery activities, where the naturalist guides will help you to explore nature and learn about high country life. The Lodge works to protect the special plants, forests and wildlife found on their high country station and surrounding lands in partnership with the Department of Conservation. For 8 years they have been fostering rare mistletoes, bellbirds, parakeets and kea in the forest around the Lodge, and have discovered and protected endangered plants in the vicinity.
They also run a successful and profitable merino wool farming programme, with the farm management programme involving building soil fertility, establishing high quality pastures and breeding a quality flock of Merino sheep with superfine wool exported to Italian fashion houses!
